A 20-year Finnish cohort study found that men who used a sauna four to seven times per week had a 63% lower risk of sudden cardiac death compared to once-weekly users. Heat stress triggers heat shock proteins — molecular chaperones that repair damaged proteins inside cells. It also produces a cardiovascular training effect: your heart rate climbs to 120–150 BPM during a session.

Cold exposure — the most accessible biohack
A 2022 study found that cold water immersion produces a 250% increase in dopamine above baseline — and that elevation holds for two to three hours. Norepinephrine goes up sharply too, which is why cold exposure has measurable effects on mood, focus, and pain tolerance. Two to three minutes at 6-10°C is sufficient. The dose-response curve flattens fast.
Breathwork — the free performance upgrade
No equipment. No booking required. Completely free. Different techniques have different use cases:
- Wim Hof / cyclic hyperventilation — drops CO2, creates a temporary stress-resilience window. Useful before cold exposure.

What's overhyped in the biohacking world
- Red light therapy beds — some evidence for wound healing, but marginal benefit at commercial dosing for healthy people. The cost rarely justifies it versus sauna or cold.
- IV drip lounges — popular in Marbella's hotel circuit. For healthy people with no clinical deficiency, there is no credible evidence that IV vitamin infusions do anything beyond adequate food and hydration.
- Most supplements — expensive placebo for people already eating well. Creatine, magnesium, and vitamin D have real evidence. Most of the rest is marketing.
